You don’t need a website that dives deep into every last detail of your business… you need one that helps people help themselves to take the next step with you.

It doesn’t matter how much you invest in your marketing strategy, if your website is hard to navigate or interpret it may be turning prospects away.

Here are five things worth checking to make sure your site’s doing its job—and helping you convert visitors into leads:

1. It’s not clear what you do right away

If a prospect lands on your homepage and they don’t understand what you do and how it helps them, they’re already bouncing.

Ask yourself:

  • Does your headline speak to the number one problem you solve?

  • Are you using plain, direct language?

  • Is it immediately obvious who your service is for?

Prospects don’t want to work to understand you. Make it easy for them to say “yes, this is what I need.”

2. Your mobile experience is not ok

Up to half of your website traffic comes from phones. If your site isn’t mobile-friendly, you’re losing people before they even get to know you.

Check this:

  • Does your site load quickly on mobile?

  • Is text readable without zooming?

  • Are buttons easy to tap?

Not sure? Pull up your site on your own phone and try to fill out your contact form. If it’s frustrating for you, it’s definitely frustrating for your prospects.

3. Your calls-to-action are weak or missing

A website without a clear next step is like having ingredients without a recipe. Prospects might like what they see, but they won’t know what to do when they’re done browsing.

Check for:

  • One clear, primary call-to-action on each page

  • Buttons that indicate what will happen (“Book a Call,” “Get a Quote”)

  • CTAs above the fold (don’t make people scroll if they know what they want)

Make it obvious what the next step is and repeat it consistently.

4. Your site feels outdated

It’s not just about having a site that looks “pretty”, it’s about establishing a user experience that builds trust.

If your site looks like it hasn’t been touched in many years, or is full of mismatched fonts or broken pages or links, prospects may wonder about the quality of your serivce.

Look for:

  • Inconsistent fonts, colours or logo versions

  • Pixelated or overly “stock-y” images

  • Outdated blog posts or copyright dates

You don’t need to start from scratch, a simple refresh can go a long way.

5. Your contact form or booking system is clunky

If someone’s ready to reach out, make it easy for them!

Check:

  • Is your contact form working? (You’d be surprised how often it’s not.)

  • Are you asking too many questions up front?

  • Do you offer options like live chat, email, or a booking link?

Friction at the finish line can lose even the most qualified prospects.

A good website doesn’t confuse, it converts.

Define what you want from your site up front, whether it’s calls, emails or meetings booked and if it’s not hitting your targets it might be time to make some updates.

Start with the basics and fix what’s broken. If you’re not sure what’s working and what’s not get feedback from your team or clients.
