Instagram has quietly rolled out a new standard for static post sizes — and if your images are looking a little off lately, this might be why.
What’s Changed?
As of January 2025, Instagram has officially moved away from its long-standing 1:1 square ratio. The new standard? A 4:5 aspect ratio — or 1080×1350 pixels.
This change allows images to take up more vertical space in the feed, making posts more engaging and giving creators more visual real estate to work with.
What does this mean for you?
To keep your content looking sharp and intentional, start designing your graphics and editing your photos to fit the new 4:5 format. Not only will this make your content stand out, but it also lets you use that extra space to share more detail, text, or visual impact.
What about older posts?
If your older 1:1 images are displaying oddly or not how you’d like them to look on your profile, you can tweak how they appear:
1. Tap the post
2. Hit the three dots in the top-right corner
3. Select ‘Adjust Preview’
4. Choose either ‘Fit’ or ‘Fill’ to control how the image displays on your grid
This is a quick way to clean up your feed without having to delete or repost anything.
Do Reels and Stories change too?
Nope! Reels and Stories are still using the 9:16 ratio (that’s 1080×1920 pixels) so keep designing those vertical formats as usual for full-screen experiences.
Final Tip
If you’ve been avoiding portrait-style photography or designs, now’s a great time to revisit them. Taller visuals will naturally perform better under this new layout so don’t be afraid to play around and see what works.
